Greece is negotiating with the United States to acquire weapons through the Excess Defense Assets (EDA) program, which allows allied countries to receive decommissioned military equipment for free, paying only for repair, modernization, and transportation costs.
According to the portal Pentapostagma, the Greek Ministry of Defense has drafted a list of interest that includes M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley combat vehicles, Apache and Black Hawk helicopters, drones, Humvees, and, most importantly, M109 Paladin self-propelled artillery systems.
Athens’ main priority is to obtain the M109A5 and M109A6 versions, which the U.S. is replacing with the more modern M109A7 model.
Although these are older pieces of equipment, the previous versions still meet the needs of the Greek Army and are seen as an opportunity to strengthen the firepower of artillery units on a large scale.
